Ferrule:

 

Young & Swartz offers a complete line of ferrule manufactured brushes, from small artist style brushes to large industrial end tip applications.  The oldest type of ferrule isn’t really a ferule – hair is tied to a handle with string and then the string is coated with glue to keep the brush together.  Today’s brushes are either round fill in heat shrink tubing, glue set or pressure “punch” stamped using metal, brass, stainless or zinc plated steel ferrules to hold the filaments in place.  Most ferrules are steel, but some brushes are manufactured using plastic or leather band ferrules, depending on the end use and fluids or chemicals encountered on the job site.
